SpotOn Radio app launched for iPhone and iPad

Posted in iPhone Apps on 11th January 2012

SpotON radio has this week been launched for the iPad and iPhone devices and it offers a great way to listen to music on your iOS enabled devices. There has also been the launch of the Soundrop.fm app this week and believe it or not, both of these applications actually use Spotify in order to stream the music that you are listening to.

Spotify is a service that allows customers to stream music to their computers free of charge but they actually charge a hefty monthly fee for iPhone users to stream music to their Spotify app. The two apps that have been released this week actually make use of the Spotify API that was released earlier last year to be able to use the Spotify service to stream music to iOS devices. SpotON allows the user to actually type in an artist name and then generates a list of songs that are available to stream; directly from Spotify. You can actually save entire radio stations on the app as well which will allow you to easily get back to what you were listening to at a later date.

Spotify is not the only music streaming service to offer up its services through an API and in fact, the US based Clear Channel company actually launched an API for their iHeartRadio service last year. There are also a number of other apps that make use of API’s in the iPhone app store too.

Posted in iPhone Apps on 23rd December 2011

The Apple iPhone has one of the best cameras on a Smartphone on the market today and a lot of users actually use a variety of apps in order to be able to share the photos that they have taken with their phone. One of the most popular apps for the iPhone when it comes to photo sharing is the Flickr app. Flickr has this week issued an update for their app that features a tweaked user interface allowing users to upload multiple photos a lot easier than before.

The Flickr update brings a tweaked user interface when it comes to uploading and picking photos. Now, the Flickr app actually shows thumbnails of all the photos that you are about to upload the to Flickr website. This allows users to be able to see what photos will actually be uploaded in a much neater way than before. As well as this, it allows users to swipe on the screen to view other photos that they might have on their phone or to tap on an image to see a larger version.

There has currently been no Flickr update issued for the iPad version of the app although it is expected that this will be issued over the next few weeks. It is expected that the update on the iPhone will make the app much more user friendly and increase its usage amongst Flickr users.

Posted in iPhone Apps on 13th December 2011

The BBC; a UK based broadcasting company, has finally released a native application for the Apple iPhone and iPad devices that will let users stream their favourite TV shows. The app that has been released by the BBC has been a while in the making and is now available to download from the iTunes app store free of charge. The app will require that users have an iPhone 3GS device or later and have the iOS 4.3 software installed as a minimum. The application allows users to be able to catch up on TV shows that they might have missed as well as radio shows on a variety of channels and stations owned by the BBC.

Previously, Apple iPhone and iPad users were able to use the iPlayer on their devices although there wasn’t a native app. This meant that users had to launch the iPlayer website in Safari on the devices and browse the iPhone and iPad versions of the iPlayer website. The application will make it easier than ever for users to be able to catch up on programming that they might have missed and users can even watch live TV.

Users will be able to stream the content over either 3G or Wi-Fi meaning that they will be able to catch up on programming anywhere they like. The BBC has said that they will shortly be rolling out 3G streaming on their native apps for Blackberry, Nokia and other devices.

New Photo sharing app for iPhone

Posted in iPhone Apps, iPhone News on 25th August 2011

photovive New Photo sharing app for iPhone The new photo sharing app for iPhone from Slide is now out of beta version and is now available for iPhone users to get it downloaded from iOS Apple Store. It has an interesting tagline “Plant a Photo- and watch it grow”. The app is described as Instagram meeting Pictu and with bit of Twitter thrown in!

The Photovine’s vine is a gallery of photos which are public collections with different tags like “cats”. It is possible to create and start your own vine. You can also use “Like” button on Facebook and Twitter friends and family and thereby share the photos.

It is not clear why the company owning Slide, Google assumes that people need a public photo sharing app on their device (iPhone). It is inconceivable that one can spend time to look at the pictures taken by someone else. Even the usefulness of sharing the photos on Facebook is questionable as Facebook already allows the sharing of the photos. Does it mean that everyone will love any photo taken by unknown persons?

It appears that Slide planned its release not on its own device first, but in iPhone and to see how it ‘performs’ on other’s devices, not its own Androids!

‘Child ID’ for iPhone – New App

Posted in iPhone Apps, iPhone News on 11th August 2011

fbi child id icon ‘Child ID’ for iPhone – New AppThe First iPhone app was developed intended to help the parents to know about the information of their children immediately. The app is called Child ID released by U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. The app can store pictures and other information, such as a child’s height and weight, for quick reference and dissemination to the police and other officials in case a child goes missing.

You’re shopping at the mall with your children when one of them suddenly disappears. A quick search of the nearby area is unsuccessful. What do you do?

Now there’s a free new tool from the FBI that can help. Our just launched Child ID app—the first mobile application created by the FBI—provides a convenient place to electronically store photos and vital information about your children so that it’s literally right at hand if you need it. You can show the pictures and provide physical identifiers such as height and weight to security or police officers on the spot. Using a special tab on the app, you can also quickly and easily e-mail the information to authorities with a few clicks.

The FBI isn’t the first federal entity to publish an app in the App Store. First there was The White House app that hit the App Store in January 2010. Then we saw the Transportation Security Administration put out its My TSA app last year, followed by the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler app last month.

Child ID is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad (though it lacks an interface optimized for the iPad’s larger screen) and requires iOS 4.2 or higher.
